On one hand, there's nothing wrong with the game, but when I go into a Sonic game I expect speed, and there was just a lot of drastic changes that removed the pick-up-and-play ability of the title. I walked away from Sonic Boom with mixed feelings. While this level incorporated the series' signature speed pads, things still felt slower-paced, and exploration and replayability with the different characters felt more encouraged here. I then switched to another level which featured all four characters and was paced faster. The pace of the game is slower than expected, and exploration is encouraged Amy's Hammer is the key to finding many of the level's secrets. The hard part was trying to get through the level without speeding through and getting over the fact that Sonic kicks and punches now. The first level in the Ryse of Lyric demo features Sonic and Amy and is pretty standard platformer fare. There are some levels that incorporate all four characters, but the game mostly uses set characters for each level. Co-op gameplay is encouraged, and the four characters have different abilities: Sonic uses speed (duh!), Amy uses her hammer, Knuckles is strong (and looks like it), and Tails can fly and use his fancy technology. A good comparison would actually be the LEGO game series from WB. If you go into Sonic Boom expecting traditional speedy Sonic gameplay, you will end up reaching the Game Over screen quickly. 
Of course, we'll see what happens when the game is launched to the market.
I got hands-on time with the Wii U version, Ryse of Lyric, at E3, and it's not the worse game in the saga, but it's so different from the other Sonic titles that the floor demo just wasn’t enough to reach a verdict. Putting all the characters from the franchise in bandages and changing how speed works, the game seems to have a long way to go before it can convince fans of the franchise. SEGA's Sonic Boom is going in a bold direction for the well-known video game franchise.
